Patricia Carney's funeral will be held at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul Thursday, September 30, 2021, at 1:30pm. All are invited to come and pray for her soul. Patricia was diagnosed with COVID-19 after symptoms began on Sept. 4, and she was admitted to the COVID ICU on Sept. 13. After receiving last rites and shortly after returning home to reunite with her children, she passed away on September 23 at 9:35pm, in the presence of her six children. A nurse with many years of child care experience, Patricia had recently accepted the position as one of our new Nursery attendants but had not had a chance to begin serving. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for her family.

Christopher Nelligan, 19, passed away at home in his sleep on Thursday, March 11, 2021. Christopher was born on January 15, 2002, to James and Denise Nelligan. Please pray for the repose of Christopher's soul. UPDATED 9/16/21: ALSO PLEASE PRAY FOR DENISE, as she is struggling with another personal situation.

Our hardworking Basilica sound technician, Mr. Kim Murfin, became extremely sick with COVID-19 and was admitted to the ER on August 26. After being on oxygen for several days, he was moved to Encompass Rehab Center, and on September 14 he was sent home to complete his therapy. He is grateful to have received the Anointing of the Sick and all the prayers. Please also pray that his wife Sheila, who has COPD, will not contract the disease.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Doris June "Peggy" Ramseur, long-time member of Sts. Peter and Paul and the former St. Francis parish of Chattanooga, who died on Sept. 1 at the age of 88 following a battle with COVID-19 and other medical problems. 22-year-old Humberto Diaz Perez, Basilica parishioner and graduate of Howard High School, passed away on September 6. His family has been active at the Basilica for years. Humberto's funeral Mass will be at the Basilica in Spanish on Saturday, September 11, at 1pm. May his soul rest in peace.

David Lawrence Rack, a long-time Basilica parishioner who had moved to Alexian Village, died on August 13. David served in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam war, then as an FBI agent, and an investigator at Unum. David also sang in the Choo Choo Chorus. The family is having a private funeral and burial, due to COVID-19. Our Jubilate Deo Youth Schola resumes this fall for students in grades 2-12 with unchanged voices. Learn to read and sing the sacred music of the Church! Classes will be on Fridays from 4:30-5:30pm, beginning Sept. 10 for new students and Oct. 1 for returning students.

Now that Fr. Patrick Ryan’s remains are entombed at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, a minimum of $25,000 is needed to bring his cause to Rome, in addition to the expenses already incurred during the exhumation and entombment. Our Basilica parish supports the Ladies of Charity, who give direct financial assistance to the poor. Besides collecting monetary donations and gently used items, their Greater Goods Gift Store needs volunteers to sort and tag their many donations, assist customers in the store, or cashier. Registration is open for RE, Youth Group, and Jubilate Deo Youth Schola! Religious Education classes for preK through 12th grade will be offered Sundays at 10:15am beginning September 12. Class attendance is required for First Holy Communion and Confirmation and is strongly encouraged for all grades. Our Youth Group for grades 6-12 will meet Wednesdays from 6-8pm beginning August 25. The Jubilate Deo Youth Schola for grades 2-12 will meet Fridays 4:30-5:30pm beginning Sept. 10 for new students/returning students joining Oct. 1. Please register on our Youth Registration page for this year, even if you registered last year.

Parishioner Jim Stewart suffered a serious bike accident before Easter that resulted in a head injury and required a hip replacement. He has completed his rehab in Atlanta and is finally back in Chattanooga! His family has set up a Caring Bridge site to assist us in following his recovery and communicating support and encouragement to him. Please pray for Jim Stewart. As a necessary step in the Cause for Sainthood for Father Patrick Ryan, the remains of Father Ryan will be exhumed beginning July 19 and moved to a new tomb at the basilica on July 31. The exhumation is a necessarily private event. However, all are invited to the July 31 events, including the procession from Mount Olivet to the Basilica, Memorial Mass, blessing of his new tomb, and reception. In-person VBS for preK through 6th graders will be held August 2, 3, and 4 from 8:45 to 11:45am. Registration is due to Florence Porter by July 25.
