Kent Dungan has recently learned that he is in full remission from blood cancer! He will be moving to chemotherapy and possibly a clinical trial to keep remission ongoing as with certain blood cancers, there is no real cure, and there is a high risk of fatal infection if he were to fracture a bone. The treatment has been difficult, but Kent and Patti are so grateful that the prognosis is better, and they appreciate your prayers that he will continue to stay in remission and that his bones will be strong and intact.

Nicholas Hickman, Basilica veteran Altar Server and Youth Group member, has completed his first year of seminary at Conception Abbey (Fr. Carter's alma mater)to become a priest. We are happy to welcome him back to the Basilica this summer. Please keep Nicholas in your prayers!

Happy 9th Anniversary of priestly ordination to Fr. Nick Tran on May 12! Fr. Tran is Priest in Residence at the Basilica of Sts. Parents and other adults who serve in ministries that involve youth are now required to be certified under the “Safe Haven” program, which has replaced the previous VIRTUS Safe Environment program for the Diocese of Knoxville. The registration and training is available online (allow 2 hours).

The Basilica has recently been asked to help with two programs to help seniors and the disabled in our community. Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals and My Ride Tennessee provides rides for essential trips to seniors and disabled folks. They need adults to deliver the meals and/or give the rides. Flexible shifts are available. Please consider volunteering for these corporal works of mercy, in the spirit of St. Joseph the Worker. Find out more here...

Bosco Joseph Paul Cooper, son of Kody and Deirdre Cooper, was stillborn April 20, 2021, 4lbs 4oz. He received the baptism of desire by his parents. A service for Bosco was held at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul Saturday, April 24. Dr. Philip Jerald Dugan, 84, former director and founder of the Cleveland and Athens Regional Cancer Centers, the Ocoee Regional Cancer Foundation, longtime resident of Birchwood, TN passed away Friday, April 16, 2021, at home with his family after a courageous 1 year battle with MD Syndrome. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul Wed., April 21, at 9am, followed by burial at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 11am.

Carter interviewed Corinne Henderson, Basilica parishioner and board member of La Paz Chattanooga, a social service organization with faith-based roots that serves and strengthens our Latino community via corporal works of mercy. We have made special accommodations to support the need for social distancing during Holy Week. We plan to live-stream all the Holy Week liturgies. On Good Friday we will have two services. Samuel Aníbal Ramírez Aguilar was born on October 29, 1991, and passed away on February 22, 2021, at the age of 29, in a car accident. Samuel’s funeral Mass in Spanish is being held on March 6 at 1:00 pm at the Basilica.
