On Saturday, Dec. 20, at 7am, we will have a Traditional Rorate Candlelight Mass in the Basilica.
It is a beautiful Catholic tradition that is celebrated during the Advent, at the darkest time of the year.
The Mass takes place by candlelight. It begins in the early morning in darkness, and by the end, the morning light shines through the Basilica's Tiffany stained glass windows, showcasing the Stations of the Cross, and illuminating the whole church.
This Mass is celebrated in honor of Mary, recalling her role in preparing for the coming of Christ, who is the Light of the World. The candlelit ambiance symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the darkness of the world, and it prepares the faithful for the joy of Christmas.
The name "Rorate Caeli" comes from the opening words of the Entrance Antiphon, taken from Isaiah 45:8: "Rorate caeli desuper et nubes pluant justum" ("Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the Just One").
