Jacqueline Mathis, mother of Basilica parishioner Anthony Mathis, passed away on Jan. 27, 2026, following a battle with Stage 4 lung cancer. Visitation will be Fri., Feb. 6 from 3pm-5pm, with a Rosary at 4:30pm, at Advantage Funeral, Franklin-Strickland Chapel, 1724 McCallie Ave. Funeral Mass will be held at the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul Sat., Feb. 7 at 10:30am, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery. We ask for your prayers for Ms. Jacqueline's soul.Read More -
Melvin Freeman, longtime attendee of the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul, has passed away at the age of 68. A service will be held Sat. Dec. 13 at 2pm at the Advantage Funeral Home, Franklin-Strickland Chapel, 1724 McCallie Ave. The Basilica will also offer a Memorial Mass for Melvin Sat., Dec. 27 at 9am. Kathryn Lois Briggs-Viland, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on October 1. Her devoted husband of 50 years, Frederick Viland, passed in 2020. They were both very deep in their Catholic faith and were proud active members of Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul. Please pray for the repose of their souls. BURIAL will be Sat. Please pray for the repose of the soul of William "Bill" Henry Henderson III, 74, who passed away peacefully in his home on September 20, 2025, after a short battle with cancer. Bill is survived by his wife, Corinne (Chair of the Basilica's Finance Council); his brother, Doug Henderson of Austin, Texas; his children, Scot Henderson, Robyn (Garrison) Elder, Mills Simon (one of the Basilica's livestream technicians), and Julia (Bo) Ray; and his three beloved grandchildren, Georgia Grace Elder, Stallings Elder, and Tinsley Ray. Basilica parishioner Nancy Fisher passed away on Memorial Day, May 26, 2025. Nancy was an active leader in our Forever Young Catholics ministry, and a past co-founding member of the Basilica's Gloria Dei Schola. During early March 2025, severe storms caused Brandon & Linsey Dean's basement retaining wall to give way. The home has been braced up but could still collapse. It will cost $50k to repair. Insurance is refusing to pay anything. Our parishioner Courtney Bolton has organized a GoFundMe to give to this beautiful family of 8 in any way you can! Any amount and prayers are needed.Read More -
Joseph Shramko suffered a serious fall on April 8, 2022, at the age of 16 and began a lengthy healing process from several brain injuries. Joseph continued rehab and was able to finish high school and begin college. In March 2019 he was able to move into his own place. The Shramkos thank you for your prayers for Joseph's full functional recovery, especially through the intercession of Fr. Patrick Ryan. Click for updates.Read More -
Our Basilica young mother, Lauren Serio, is suffering from cancer in her brain, lungs, and spine. She is now halfway through chemotherapy. Cate Mueller passed away on May 11, 2024, a day before her 59th birthday, after a 20-month battle with cancer. We pray that Cate may rest in peace. Visitation will be 1-5pm June 16 with a Vigil Service at 4:30pm at Hamilton Funeral Home on Hixson Pike; Visitation and eulogies 9am June 17, followed by funeral Mass at 9:30am at the Basilica of Sts. We pray for the repose of the soul of Sue Shramko, who passed away May 1, 2024. She had been suffering from an infectious lung disease for several months. John Mahoney, the Basilica's maintenance supervisor for the past 34 years, passed away on August 27, 2023 at 7:13pm, while hospitalized with pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism. John was about to retire from his job within the week, having completed 34 years of service at Sts. Peter and Paul. His family was by his side, and Fr. Carter administered the full last rites to John. Please pray the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet for John Mahoney's soul. *** FUNERAL Mass at the Basilica Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023 at 1pm, followed by burial at Mount Olivet.
