Jacqueline Mathis, mother of Basilica parishioner Anthony Mathis, passed away on Jan. 27, 2026, following a battle with Stage 4 lung cancer. Visitation will be Fri., Feb. 6 from 3pm-5pm, with a Rosary at 4:30pm, at Advantage Funeral, Franklin-Strickland Chapel, 1724 McCallie Ave. Funeral Mass will be held at the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul Sat., Feb. 7 at 10:30am, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery. We ask for your prayers for Ms. Jacqueline's soul.
The men of Sts. Peter & Paul and St. Jude have started an inter-parish Bible study at 6:30pm every Friday. The group meets at the St. Jude Library, and men from all parishes are invited. We will have a potluck on Friday 2/6 at 6:30pm at the Parish Life Center, and we will be starting Wisdom of the Fathers studying the Church Fathers and how we can apply it to modern day. The developer, Evelyn Capital, has withdrawn the rezoning petition to build a 12-story building that would have overshadowed the Basilica and threatened its structural integrity. We are collaborating with the developer to discuss alternative solutions that would benefit the community.

Melvin Freeman, longtime attendee of the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul, has passed away at the age of 68. A service will be held Sat. Dec. 13 at 2pm at the Advantage Funeral Home, Franklin-Strickland Chapel, 1724 McCallie Ave. The Basilica will also offer a Memorial Mass for Melvin Sat., Dec. 27 at 9am. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on Feb. 2, which is also Candlemas, marks the traditional end to the extended Christmas/Epiphanytide season. We will have the traditional blessing of candles and an indoor procession at our 12pm sung Mass on Feb. 2. You may bring your own candles from home to be blessed at this Mass. Please make sure your candles are clearly labeled with your name.

The priests of the diocese have their annual study days in Gatlinburg this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 10 and 11, we will not be able to offer confessions, and a deacon will offer a Communion service at our scheduled Mass times. Please pray for our priests!
